It’s finally here! The time for campfires, beach trips, ultimate frisbee, and ice cream cones. It’s also the perfect time for reflection on the past year and getting excited about what is to come! Here are 4 things to reflect on during the kickoff into summer!

4 Things to Reflect on When School’s Out for the Summer

1. Goodbyes and Endings

"How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard."- Winnie the Pooh

Summer will always end with what seems like goodbyes. Classes, heavy schedules, routines that felt chaotic at times. That ending opens the door to slower days and more room to breathe. Although, it’s okay to also feel a sense of sentimentality for the memories and experiences felt this past year.

Saying either goodbyes or simply “see ya later’s” to friends can be difficult. Summer acts as a transition period for many, so it’s only natural to take time to adjust to new routines.

For me, it means spending as much time as possible with people before I start the next chapter of my life. It is important to me to savour as many moments of where I am now before I move on.

2. Fresh Starts

"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end"- Seneca

The start of summer is the beginning of a new chapter! The warm days approaching give way for new adventures and opportunities to be excited for. Being grateful for the past and excited for the future is what can make summer so special. And, summer beginnings are yours to define. You get to decide how to spend this precious time.

3. Much Needed Breaks!

"People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day." - Winnie the Pooh

One of the most important human needs is rest, and summer is such a great time to lean into that! With school sometimes being so stressful, summer is the perfect palette cleanser after a long year of hustle.

Yes, it can be good to fill summer up with jobs and volunteering, social events and family reunions, but don’t forget to also use the time you have to relax in any way you want. For me, that’s summer reading!

4. A Chance to Explore

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” - John Lennon, Beautiful Boy

Whether it’s a road trip, a creative project, or simply staying up late with friends, it’s the season that allows you to say yes. Think of summer as an invitation to do all the things that you wished you had time for during the school year.

Like John Lennon sang, sometimes the best adventures aren’t planned but spontaneous, and can surprise us. Keeping an open mind for new opportunities that might appear during these months might be the stepping stone to discovering new things about yourself.

I hope you have an amazing summer!
