As the school begins to wind down, it’s easy to start thinking about what friendships built and grown this year will look like in the summer. With the never-ending routine of classes and club meetings, I find it pretty easy to stay connected to my friends and peers during the school year. The tricky part is that when I have all this time in the summer I forget what it's like to be around people all day. Asking myself “What do I want my relationships to look like in the summer?” will help me prepare for a summer of connection.
3 Tips for Staying in Touch With Friends During Summer Break
Make plans early
Sometimes, it feels like it’s hard to get all your friends together in the summer because there is so much going on! Vacations, summer jobs, trips to the cottage and more all make it more challenging to navigate group plans. That’s why making group plans earlier in the summer might help you “lock down” time to spend with each other.
Keep up little traditions
If you always sit together at lunch, maybe recreate that with a weekly coffee or picnic in the park. A routine makes it easier to stay in touch and gives you all something to look forward to in the busy (or boring) summer weeks.
Use tech meaningfully
It can seem like Snapchat is all you need to stay connected with friends in the summer. The reality is, most times we need something deeper in order to stay connected and not feel isolated. Snap streaks are okay, but also try calling and FaceTiming your friends for real conversations. It can feel so good to catch up, even if you aren't able to be with each other in person.
Speaking of technology, summer is also a great time to reflect on the role that technology plays in our friendships all yea round. Science has proved the benefits of real, face-to-face connection with peers. Building healthy tech habits, for example putting your phones away while hanging out with friends, is a great way to build deeper connections with those that matter to you.
