3 Reasons Why Making Real-Life Connections Matters in School

In school, our phones can feel like our lifelines. Keeping us connected to friends, group chats, and endless social media updates, it feels like such a relief to be connected like this in the world today. However, sometimes the same screens that bring us closer can also create distance we don’t even notice. I think for me, the reason why I feel disconnected sometimes despite always feeling “in the loop” on my phone is because I am trying to replace something real with quick notifications and surface-level interactions.
As a self proclaimed history nerd, really we can see that this is the first time in history that humans have been interacting this way. It’s new, and we are all trying to figure it out. And yes, while online connections come with SO many benefits, like communicating during worldwide pandemics as an example, finding a balance in this new world might be the key to finding belonging and happiness.
Belonging
Belonging is the feeling of acceptance without having to change or hide certain parts of yourself. It can look different for everyone, and it is a super essential part of building community. It’s important to differentiate belonging from fitting in. Real connection starts with feeling seen, valued, welcomed, and accepted by those around you. Building these relationships is a great way to counteract loneliness and isolation in school environments.
Motivation
Whether it’s practicing for a big game, organizing a fundraiser, or preparing for exams, working with others toward a common goal pushes you to stay motivated and reminds you that your efforts matter. Motivation helps create excitement in the day and a chance to make the absolute most of your high school careers.
Improved Mental Health
Community can greatly decrease the amount of loneliness, stress, and anxiety felt in high school as it offers a great support system that works both ways. Knowing friends that you can talk to, lean on, and also lift up means that deep connection has been made! Really, this is what can make high school challenges feel easier to handle and boost overall well-being.
The other awesome part is, every single person has the power to create and participate in community building at school. The best way to find community is to simply make it yourself. That means being welcoming and supportive of others. Ultimately, finding belonging at school is a great way to feel genuine connection to your peers that will benefit you in so many ways.
